The latest news on the controversial initiative

Following the overwhelmingly negative public feedback on the proposals for the Snowdonia Green Key Scheme, it has had a major rethink. RPS consultants have looked at the scheme, its history and the comments made and come up with a number of recommendations on how to proceed. The main points to note are: - The very controversial enforced ‘park and ride’ and rural clearway parts of the scheme have been dropped. - Parking and congestion are not major problems within the park, though it is recommended that increased parking be provided at Pen y Gwryd, Ogwen Valley and that a shuttle bus run along the Llanberis Pass during busy periods. - The SHERPA bus service should be improved. - Footpath and cycle networks should be improved. - Public transport should be better co-ordinated. - Coaches should all follow the same circulation through the park (to avoid congestion at narrow passing places). - Gateway towns should operate as ‘National Park Welcome Centres’ for visitors.

As a result, the latest proposals seem much more palatable to the local population and climbers and hill-walkers alike.
