Wondering what to do with your old gear? Why not recycle it. Keswick retailer George Fisher has teamed up with Green Peak Gear to launch a new recycling initiative.
For its size, Keswick has a very high population of climbers. Hardly a surprise when you consider the crags on their doorstep. Yet hidden in their sheds and garages is an untapped resource; hundreds of metres of old climbing rope.
Climbers have to ‘retire’ ropes after a certain amount of use, as exposure to UV light, repeated impacts and abrasion from the rock weakens the nylon. But climbers being climbers, they don’t want to throw them away. So hundreds of metres of rope is sitting out there, gathering dust.
Keswick retailer George Fisher has launched an initiative that solves the dilemma. Their ‘Money For Old Rope’ scheme means you can take an old rope into George Fisher and it will be recycled by Green Peak Gear, a Cheshire-based organisation that collects used climbing gear and remakes it into new products. Not only that, you’ll get a 15% discount on the RRP of a new Mammut or Sterling rope.
As Jon Wickham from George Fisher explains, the idea is that no climbing gear goes to landfill. “Where possible Green Peak Gear remakes items into new products, or redistributes the gear for alternative uses. At present they make rope rugs, dog leads and skipping ropes with more products coming soon.”
Profits from Green Peak Gear sales are donated to the
BMC Access and Conservation Trust, the charitable arm of the BMC. George Fisher set up the ‘Money For Old Rope’ initiative in partnership with Green Peak Gear, and rope companies Mammut UK and Sterling Ropes.
