Podlediad Gorwelion Gwyllt: Gerwyn Jones yn trafod Eifionydd

Posted by Niall Grimes on 07/12/2021

Ardal yng Ngogledd-Orllewin Cymru, yn estyn o Ddwyrain Llŷn yr holl ffordd i Borthmadog, (ac efallai y tu hwnt, dibynnu pwy sy’n cael eu holi) ydi Eifionydd. Mae’r Afon Erch yn ffin Orllewinol iddi. Mae Moel Hebog, Moel y Gest, Moel Lefn a Moel yr Ogof yn rai o’r copaon di-ri sydd werth ymweld â nhw yno.

Er heb ei gwerthfawrogi cystal â’i chymdogion adnabyddus, mae bryniau creigiog a mynyddoedd Eifionydd, yn ogystal â gwastatir Traeth Mawr yn creu golygfeydd godidog a chyferbyniad dirweddol hollol unigryw a hardd.

Yn gyfarwydd iawn i ddringwyr diolch i glogwyni poblogaidd Tremadog, mae’na lawer i’w gynnig hefyd i’r rheini sydd well ganddynt gerdded, a thrwy gydol y cyfweliad yma, mae cariad Gerwyn at yr ardal yn disgleirio. Ynddo, mae hefyd yn rhannu pam ei bod hi’n ystyrlon iddo rannu delweddau o’r ardal ynghlwm â cherddi a phenillion Cymreig (wedi eu cyfieithu er mwyn i bawb gael eu mwynhau). Rydym hefyd yn trafod llwybrau unigryw i gael gweithio yn y mynyddoedd i greu bywoliaeth, a pham fod diwylliant ac iaith yn teimlo’n hollol anwahanadwy oddi wrth yr awyr agored. Mynegai Gerwyn ei farn ar bwysigrwydd arddull gynhwysol a chynrychioladol pan mae hi’n dod at yr iaith, yn enwedig yn y diwydiant awyr agored.

“Mae’r ffaith fod yr iaith Gymraeg yna yn bwysig fel bod pobl yn ei gweld hi.. Mae’r Gymraeg yn gallu mynd ar goll”.

Dyma bodlediad Cymraeg cyntaf erioed y BMC, (a fy nghynnig cyntaf erioed i ar y cyfrwng), felly plîs, rhannwch hi ac unrhyw un sy’n siarad (neu yn dysgu) yr iaith, a gyrrwch unrhyw adborth/cyngor/awgrymiadau pellach ataf i, eben.muse@thebmc.co.uk <mailto:eben.muse@thebmc.co.uk>, byddwn i’n falch iawn o’u cael nhw. Ein bwriad yw cynyddu allbwn cynnwys Cymraeg gwreiddiol yn y dyfodol, a gobeithio fod hwn yn gam yn y cyfeiriad hynny.

Wild Horizons Podcast: Creating a fuller picture. Gerwyn Jones on Eifionydd.

Eifionydd is an area in North-West Wales stretching from the East of the Llŷn Peninsula all the way to Porthmadog (and maybe a smidge beyond, depends who you ask). The Afon Erch forms its Western border. Moel Hebog, Moel y Gest, Moel Lefn, and Moel yr Ogof, are just a few of the exceptional peaks that are well worth a visit here.

Though often underappreciated, the rugged hills and mountains of Eifionydd, paired with the flat farmland of the reclaimed flatlands of Traeth Mawr, give views and a true geographic contrast that’s unique and incredibly beautiful.

Well-known to climbers thanks to the ever-popular cliffs of Tremadog, there is much to love here for those who prefer to walk, and throughout this interview Gerwyn’s love for the area shines brightly. In it, he also shares why he thinks it’s meaningful for him to share images of the area, paired with Welsh language poetry and verses (translated bilingually for the enjoyment of all). We muse on individual pathways into working in the hills and mountains, and discuss why culture and language feel inseparable from the outdoors. He expresses his views on the importance of an inclusive and representative approach to language in the outdoor industry.

“The fact that the Welsh language is present is important, so that people see it! The language can easily go missing.”

This being the BMC’s first ever Welsh-Language podcast offering (and my first ever effort at the medium), please share with your Welsh-speaking friends and feel free to send feedback/advice/recommendations to me at eben.muse@thebmc.co.uk, I would be most grateful to receive them. It is our hope to increase our output of original Welsh content in the future and hopefully this is a stepping stone in that direction.

It is great to see something in the Welsh language.. When I started walking and climbing in Snowdonia in 1954 I rarely heard Welsh being spoken in the mountains and I used to tell London friends this fact. That is why most of the climbing centers were run by English owners much to the chagrin of Gwynedd Councillors.
I always felt that instead of blaming the Welsh they blamed the English for this anomaly.
