Described as the first complete field guide to the mountains of Snowdonia throughout the seasons, this little book by Mike Raine, is the first such guide aimed directly at the needs of climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers who enjoy Snowdonia's natural wonders.
Ever wondered what that white flowering plant at the base of Cloggy in May is called, or the species of crow with red legs that you saw feeding on the grassland of the Northern Carneddau? Or even what sort of rock makes up those crucial jugs on the final traverse of Left Wall?
Well the secret is out, but only if you get hold of a copy of every prospective Mountain Leader's essential guide to the Nature of Snowdonia. Illustrated with colour photographs, this little field guide takes you through each season, describing what flowers, lichens, mosses, animals and birds can be seen at different times of the year. Originally concieved as a resource book for prospective (and qualified) mountain leaders, this highly informative book goes by the sub-title of a "Beginners Guide to the Upland Environment".
A very easy to use book, which also has sections on local myths and legends, and a section on upland farming and land use, will really add to the enjoyment of anyone, from beginner to expert who enjoys the natural splendours of Snowdonia. It even has the Latin and Welsh names for most species!
The author is Mike Raine, a Senior Instructor at Plas y Brenin, and current chair of BMC Cymru/Wales, who describes his book "as an unashamed celebration of Snowdonia's fascinating flora and fauna."
The book is published by Pesda Press and if it helps mountaineers, hill walkers and climbers to understand and appreciate our natural enviroment that little bit more, then hopefully it will also make the Access & Conservation team's work here at BMC that much easier!
