The Peak District National Park Authority (PDNPA) has decided to challenge the High Court Judge’s decision to allow quarrying to resume at Longstone Edge.

Following the worrying decision by High Court Judge, Mr Justice Sullivan when he overturned the inspectorate’s decision at Longstone Edge and ruled that the quarry operators could continue to remove and sell as much limestone as operationally possible, the PDNPA has agreed to seek leave to take this to the Court of Appeal.

A coalition of national and local environmental and amenity groups, including the British Mountaineering Council, the Council for National Parks, the Campaign to Protect Rural England, Friends of the Earth, Friends of the Peak District, Plantlife, the Ramblers’ Association and the Save Longstone Edge Group, have already called on Government ministers to step in and save the Peak District from uncontrolled quarrying. The local MP for the area, Patrick McLoughlin met with Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for the Environment and urged him to act quickly. As BMC members, you too can also play your part by writing to your local MP.
