In response to the devastating earthquake in Nepal, the BMC is calling on mountaineers and the wider outdoor community to pledge items for an exciting charity auction to raise funds for the people of Nepal.
Famous mountaineers including Sir Chris Bonington, Doug Scott CBE, Kenton Cool, Alan Hinkes OBE and Rebecca Stephens MBE have already pledged unique memorabilia from their Everest expeditions.
Items include expedition equipment, personalised signed photographs of the mountaineers on Everest as well as signed books and other historic collectables.
The Alpine Club , whose members have shaped climbing in Nepal since it was first opened to Westerners 66 years ago, is supporting this venture and Alpine Club members have generously donated some valuable items of remarkable significance.
Among the lots, there will be the opportunity to bid to win a hike and a bite to eat with British mountain guide Kenton Cool.
The BMC is grateful for any support from the outdoor community, including pledges of gear and/ or experience days/sessions with brand athletes.
The auction will be held on eBay. Proceeds will go to Community Action Nepal , providing long-term support to the mountain people of Nepal, with some items also going to help the Paldorje Sherpa Education Fund .
Community Action Nepal (CAN) is a UK based charity whose aim is to help the mountain people of Nepal through operating medical posts, schools and mountain porter rescue shelters. The charity was founded by Doug Scott CBE, who in 1975 made the first British ascent of Everest.
BMC president, Rehan Siddiqui, said: “The catastrophe in Nepal has shocked and saddened the world. Support for the Nepalese people is particularly strong amongst the mountaineering, climbing, trekking and other outdoor activities community, who have long held a deep regard for this region and its wonderful inhabitants.
“We're calling for donations of items and 'experiences' from mountaineers, explorers, adventurers, venues, activity centres and retailers, as well as sport organisations and the wider business world."
The auction is expected to generate great interest from the general public, mountain enthusiasts, historians, and collectors alike.
