What does the famous mass trespass of 1932 have to teach us in 2016? The BMC’s hill walking officer, Carey Davies, will tackle this question along with other speakers at an annual celebration event in Hayfield this Saturday.
The annual Spirit of Kinder Day is happening in Hayfield this year. Inspired by the Kinder Scout Mass Trespass, it aims to commemorate the past but also to look forward to current and future challenges around the environment and access to the countryside.
In a talk called 'Trespass in the 21st century', Carey will discuss the obstacles that remain to making the outdoors open to everyone, and what the BMC is doing to overcome them. He will argue that the fight for ‘access’ should involve both advancing the right to roam and tackling social barriers to experiencing nature.
As well as working for the BMC, Carey is a freelance writer with regular slots in The Great Outdoors magazine and The Guardian’s Country Diary series. His talk will also incorporate some of his personal experiences, including walking in the West Bank of Palestine.
The fourth Spirit of Kinder Day will be held at The Royal Hotel, Hayfield at 2pm on Saturday 23 April, with art exhibitions, displays and stalls in the Royal Hotel and Hayfield Village Hall from 11am.

Admission to the Spirit of Kinder Day is free and all are welcome, but as space in the hotel is limited, people are advised to arrive early. The orgainsers are encouraging people to use public transport. Trains run to New Mills and Glossop from Manchester and Stockport, and buses link with Hayfield.
Other events during the weekend include the unveiling the first of several interpretive plaques which together will form a Trespass Trail, art exhibitions in the Village Hall, live music, and three led walks.
