International Mountain Day

Today is International Mountain Day. Since the UN General Assembly designated 11 December as International Mountain Day in 2003, it has been an annual opportunity to create awareness about the importance of mountains highlight issues in mountain development.

This year's theme is Managing Mountain Biodiversity for Better Lives and aims to promote awareness and action for the sustainable management of mountain biodiversity for the benefit of all.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is the lead coordinating agency for International Year of Mountains.  You can find out more information here.
