ICUN Peace Park in the Balkans

Posted by on 18/12/2002

The world Conservation Union ICUN is developing a protected area in the Mountains of Northern Albania, Montenegro and Kosovo.

There are several other “peace parks” already in existence around the world, being trans-boundary (i.e. cross-border) protected areas dedicated to fostering peace and co-operation, and the protection and maintenance of biological, cultural and natural resources. ICUN hopes that the park (in one of the world’s poorest and turbulent regions) will encourage visits by foreign mountaineers in the interests of promoting sustainable visitor activities within the area. More information on the park can be obtained from Richard Hargreaves – strandho@aol.com
