People go on a vast range of trips and expeditions. Many of them are totally self-funded, but some do receive some sort of financial support of varying amounts and for different reasons.
Financial supports falls into two basic kinds:
Sponsorship from commercial companies
To obtain this sort of support you will need to write to companies that you think will offer you support. You might try asking them for material, equipment, etc; or you might ask them for money. It helps if you can find out the name of the most appropriate person within the organisation to contact.
Grants
There are a range of trusts, foundations and other bodies that offer grants. They usually require that this money is applied for in some way.
If you are interested in applying for grants from such bodies, the first thing you need to do is look at the range of funding bodies available and find out what sorts of trips they are willing to support. Check out their conditions, or funding criteria, and see whether your trip meets their requirements or not.
Consider the sorts of amounts they tend to give out by looking at the awards they have made in previous years as these are likely to be a good indicator of what they can offer. Then look at what they might want in return. This might be use of photos, a report, mention in publicity, etc. Next, check out the application process and procedures. Often they will require you to fill in an application form, but some, the MEF for example, may also require an interview.
If you are happy with everything, and you think you or your trip meets their requirements, then put in an application. It will be assessed and in due course you will hear whether you have been successful or not.
