A huge thank you to all the Horseshoe Heroes that pledged to the BMC Crowdfunder campaign to help make the quarry a safer place to climb. Over £16,000 was pledged by more than 500 Horseshoe Heroes: it was awesome to see the level of support from everybody!
Horseshoe Quarry – the well-known BMC-owned sport climbing venue in the Peak District – received a makeover this summer as it underwent a rebolting project to make the quarry safer and accessible for all levels of climbers. To help fund the project, we started a Crowdfunder 'Horseshoe Heroes' to try and raise money from the climbing community.
The campaign was massively successful, with 508 supporters pledging a total of £16,205 to smash our £15,000 target. Rewards ranged from Horseshoe Hero t-shirts and bespoke sculptures made out of the old bolts and chains, to adopting your favourite route or going on a masterclass with legend Steve McClure.
Thanks for digging deep and helping us improve this ever popular crag for current and future generations of climbers; you're all 100% Horseshoe Heroes!

Why did we need to rebolt Horseshoe Quarry?
Some incredibly unsafe bolts that were removed during the project.
With a high concentration of routes in the low to mid grades, Horseshoe is perennially popular and it’s only during the most torrential of downpours that you won’t see a few climbers’ cars in the car park. It attracts everyone from beginners making their first tentative steps onto an outdoor crag after learning to climb at an indoor wall, to hard yarding veterans going for another lap on one of the Main Wall classics.
The vast majority of routes in the quarry rely on bolts for protection and the existing bolts were widely varying in vintage and quality, as well as having some excessively high first clips. The aim of the project was to re-equip all sport routes on BMC land to make the crag as safe and amenable a place to climb as is reasonably possible for all experience levels.
High quality stainless steel glue in bolts were used giving great strength and longevity and all lower offs will be standardised with a double bolt lower off featuring a maillon and ring on each bolt to allow straightforward threading of ropes, whilst being easily replaceable if the rings start to wear through in the future.
