Honister zip wire planning decision

Posted by Rob Dyer on 07/09/2011

The Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) Development Control Committee met today in Kendal to discuss, among other things, a planning application for a 1.2km long zip wire running from the top of Black Star on Fleetwith Pike to the car park at Honister Slate Mine.

The BMC formally objected to the proposal in May, following discussion and a vote at a Lake District area meeting on grounds of the development being inappropriate for the area and concern over loss of tranquillity.

During the Committee meeting today, officers from the Development Management Department of the LDNPA presented their report to the Committee, stressing a fine balance between the negative aspects of the development (these mainly focussing on loss of tranquillity and environmental concerns) and the positive (mainly focussing on improving the economic situation locally by attracting younger people to the area).

Following this, representatives of Friends of the Lake District and the two closest communities Buttermere and Borrowdale spoke against the proposal whilst representatives of Honister Slate Mine, Cumbria tourism and Chris Bonington spoke in favour of the proposal.

Finally, members of the committee each had a chance to speak about their take on the evidence presented to them and a vote was taken. The result of this was a vote of 5 members supporting the proposal and 9 opposing it and planning permission being refused in this case.
