ACT is the BMC Access and Conservation Trust. It aims to promote sustainable access to cliffs, mountains and open countryside by facilitating education and conservation projects that safeguard the access needs of climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers.

Many crags are protected by law for the important flora and faunal qualities they hold. Many crags carry bird restrictions (typically from 1st March to 30th June) to protect Schedule 1 birds (e.g. Peregrines and Ravens). The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 states that it is an offence to 'intentionally' or 'recklessly' disturb a Schedule 1 bird 'at or near' the nest. It is also an offence to disturb 'dependent' fledged young. For this reason, restrictions at certain crags are put in place and these have been respected over the years to the credit of climbers. If you are visiting a crag you should check first to see if there are any restrictions by visiting the Regional Access Database and respect any signs that are on display at the crag you visit.

Unfortunately, there is no legal right to wild camp in England or Wales unless you have specific agreement from the landowner. Iif you do so without permission you may be trespassing and could face a fine. In some upland areas wild camping is informally tolerated but you should contact the local authority, national park or enquire locally before setting out.  In Scotland, wild camping is permitted in most areas as long as it's carried out in small numbers and you adhere to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
