An exhibition that celebrates Alan Hinkes’ mountaineering achievements has opened at the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum in Middlesbrough.
In May 2005 Alan became the first Briton and only the thirteenth person to climb all fourteen 8,000-metre peaks. The exhibition: ‘14 over 8,000’ features many of Alan’s own photographs taken on his expeditions as well as a range of climbing equipment and Tibetan Buddhist costumes and wall hangings.
Alan was awarded the OBE in the 2006 New Year's Honours. He is an Honorary Citizen of his home town, Northallerton; Yorkshireman of the Year 2005; an Honorary Fellow of the University of Sunderland; and has received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Royal Institute of Navigation and the President’s Award for Outstanding Voluntary Contribution to Water Aid.
He is involved in charitable work for Water Aid, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Outward Bound. He also works closely with the BMC.
The exhibition runs until Sunday 24 June. Admission is free.
