Climbers, trees & overgrown crags

Posted by BMC on 07/11/2006
Gardoms crag - Peak District

As climbers know all too well - many of our crags are becoming increasingly overgrown, tree covered and difficult to access. As a result, the BMC is looking to commission an important piece of work to raise awareness of the importance of cliffs for recreation and the benefits of active woodland management.

Recent case study evidence from sites such as Dovedale, Cheddar Gorge, High Rocks and Tremadog have shown that the sensitive management of trees and vegetation can improve both the amenity and landscape value of cliffs, and their ecology value as wildlife habitats.

The BMC is producing a publication - aimed at landowners and countryside organisations - to help promote the good work that has been undertaken at sites around the country and explain how the BMC can contribute to new woodland/vegetation management projects in terms of direct funding and the provision of local volunteer support.  The publication will be produced over the winter months and will be available in March 2007.

If you are interested in applying for this contract please download the project specification. The closing date for the submission of expressions of interest is 5pm, Friday 24th November.

Climbing, walking & ash dieback: what do you need to know?

Many of the landscapes we visit and value as climbers and walkers are dominated by ash woodland, but a fungal disease – ash dieback – is expected to decimate the population of these trees across Britain. Not only might the landscape change dramatically, but also the rapid decay in affected trees can make them dangerous to anyone walking underneath, not to mention climbers who might have up until now relied on ash trees for runners or belays. This could be a new type of objective danger to many of us, but what do we need to know and how can you assess the risk?
