Cliffhanger, Sheffield's big outdoor event for outdoor people, is back for 2011 and promises to be bigger and better than ever.
The festival will take place on the weekend of Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd July. Based in one of Sheffield’s biggest green spaces, Millhouses Park, Cliffhanger is the UK’s biggest outdoors event for outdoors folk. With more than 20,000 visitors over two days it aims to inspire and involve people of all ages.
Cliffhanger will feature elite competitions, with the penultimate round of the IFSC Bouldering World Cup. There will also be professional demonstrations in rock climbing, orienteering, kayaking, mountain biking, running, mountain boarding, skateboarding, slack-lining, adventure racing and more, visitors are able to watch incredibly talented sports-people of all ages at the top of their game, and then take part in the very sports they have just been inspired by.
The organisers are proud to announce a visually stunning, bespoke inflatable cube to replace the traditional big-top marquee. Sheffield City Council’s Outdoors Events Manager Kevin Cheetham says: “The Cube is a futuristic, eco-friendly, low-energy structure. We believe it’ll really enhance the event. And we’re proud a local company, Airspace Structures (airspacestructures.co.uk), are designing especially for Cliffhanger.”
Event co-organiser Matt Heason from Heason Events, says: “Sheffield’s proving itself a real hub for outdoors sports like climbing, mountain-biking, running and caving. The city’s great vibe and excellent facilities make it the natural choice for visitors to the Peak District. Over just one weekend in March Sheffield hosted the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival, the Steve Peat Steel City Mountain Bike downhill race; the Climbing Works International Festival and the BMC regional youth climbing finals. Ticket sales for ShAFF were up by more than 75%; CWIF was bursting at the seams and the bike race sold out in a day. The fact that feedback shows more people travelled from further afield than ever before proves the city’s reputation as a mecca for outdoors enthusiasts.”
Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, says: “Cliffhanger promises to be a real draw for visitors – and quite rightly described by some as one of the UK’s biggest outdoor festivals for outdoor folk. We hope to welcome more than 20,000 people in two days, which is fantastic for South Yorkshire and reaffirms the county as a destination for the biggest and best events around.”
