Climbers are reminded that permission to climb in Cheddar Gorge is subject to climbers abiding by a Code of Conduct, which includes a requirement to be covered by liability insurance, and to adhere to agreed restrictions.

Cheddar Gorge is a fantastic place to climb, but it also has a number of safety restrictions to protect other visitors. It is essential that all climbers respect the restrictions and adhere to the BMC agreed Code of Conduct at all times.

Combined Liability insurance

Climbers must have liability insurance, and be able to show proof of this cover, such as a BMC membership card, if requested. All BMC and MCofS members receive £15 million of combined liability insurance cover as part of their membership. 

Access and approaches

Climbers should adhere to agreed route restrictions and use specified approaches and descents. It has been reported that some climbers have been approaching Lion Rock directly via private land from the Costa car park. Please use the correct access route.

Climbers’ Code of Conduct

The Code of Conduct was agreed with Cheddar Caves & Gorge (owners of the South Side), and The National Trust (who own the North Side) in 2005. It is vital that climbers familiarise themselves with these arrangements before climbing.
