One of mountaineering's most inspirational figures and Italy's most celebrated living climber, Riccardo Cassin, turns 100 today (2 January)
Cassin's passion for climbing was born when he lived in Lecco in the Italian Alps from the age of 17. Among his greatest routes was his 1938 first ascent of the Walker Spur on the Grandes Jorasses.

Reaching his century is one further achievement for a phenomenal pioneer of climbing. The BMC wishes Riccardo many happy returns.
