Just before winter set in, British climbers made three World class ascents in the Himalaya.
In Nepal, Kenton Cool and Ian Parnell, climbing with American John Varco, made the first ascent of the South West Ridge of 7,555m Annapurna III, a highly coveted line that had repelled several strong European parties. Further east Nick Bullock, climbing solo, made the first ascent of 6,500m Teng Kang Poche’s icy North East Face in Everest’s Khumbu region, after two previous attempts on the mountain with other climbers had failed. Finally, gaining permission to enter the more remote Daxue Shan region of China’s Eastern Himalaya, Julie Ann Clyma and Roger Payne made the first ascent of Mt Grosvenor (6,376m), a difficult rock and ice pyramid that had also repelled previous parties.
