The BMC recently met with Natural England to discuss access and conservation issues at this picturesque location.
The Stipestones are series of quartzite tors and pinnacles along Stiperstones Hill, north-west of the Long Mynd. The area is a National Nature Reserve and SSSI owned by Natural England, and subject to unusual local bylaws which restrict certain recreational activities - including 'rock climbing with equipment'.
Natural England currently operate a permit system for climbing on the site and request "No permanent climbing aids", which is taken to mean no pegs, tat or bolts.
To discuss the permit system get in touch with Richard Law (BMC West Midlands Access Rep. email rplaw@tarmac.co.uk or the Natural England site manager on (01743) 792294.
Unfortunately, the potential for climbing and bouldering on the Stiperstones is quite limited, but it's still a great place for a walk with good views into Wales - why not check it out.
The outcrop of Nipstone Rock, a little further to the SSW, is managed by the Shropshire Wildlife Trust. No restrictions are known on this crag.
