RAD: Android and iPhone apps

Posted by Alex Messenger on 01/02/2013
Rad: available to download now

Get all the essential BMC crag access info on Android or iPhone, with our new Regional Access Database (RAD) apps.

The BMC’s Regional Access Database – or RAD as it’s more snappily known – is the definitive source of access info on the web. From bird restrictions and parking advice to sensitive approaches and advice on local ethics, this is the place to go to find out whether you can climb on a crag and just how to approach it.

But when you’re on the go, chasing the weather across the Peak District, it’s hard to find the time to stop and check the BMC website. Enter our new apps – giving you access information, wherever you are.

You can search from crags (or just let your phone show you nearby crags with access information), report an access problem and mark crags as favourites for quick access updates on your dashboard.

BMC Access and Conservation Officer Rob Dyer said: “The whole BMC access team is excited about the new apps. We’ve been working on them over the last year and they are a great leap forward for BMC access information. I installed the Android app and it’s certainly made my life easier. Give them a try!”

Install the app now:

We want to say a big thanks to every BMC member who continues to support us through the Coronavirus crisis.

From weekly Facebook Lives and GB Climbing home training videos, to our access team working to re-open the crags and fight for your mountain access, we couldn’t do it without you.

Did you know that we've just launched a new U27 membership offer for just £1.50 / month? And with full membership from £2.50 / month, it's never been easier to join and support our work:

It's a pleasure to find the Android app available first

Great idea, cool app!

It should go open source, I'm sure it would receive plenty of attention and contributions from other developers.

I'd love to make it open source! Since the app was initially completed as part of my MSc it's not completely clear who owns the IP. I asked the university if they care whether it's released or not earlier this year and am waiting for an answer (if I have to wait too long I consider that implicit consent to release :-)).

iPhone too please! The demand is there...

It would be great if the BMC could release documentation for the RAD data API ... It could be rolled into other websites/apps then.

I find myself using this app all the time. It's really useful at this time of year to find out when the bird restrictions are lifting, but I also check out other access issues and even used it (with my phone's Navigation app) to get driving directions down all those wiggly back roads to Trowbarrow - right to the parking spot! Great work - thanks.

will this be available for windows phones???

Sadly, the Google Play Store says
"This app isn't available for your device because it was made for an older version of Android" :-(
Could the app be updated, please?
Perhaps if maintenance of the app is a struggle it would be worth open sourcing it so that other climbers who know how to develop apps can contribute?
