Following discussions at BMC area meetings and National Council over the past two years, formal position statements on drilled equipment and the separate but related issue of dry tooling have been agreed.
The new statements reflect the evolution of climbing over the past 20 years and the development of attitudes to drilled equipment and new forms of climbing. They provide guidance on safeguarding traditions and protecting the crag and mountain environment, as well as outlining the consultation process for agreeing new bolting and dry tooling activity.
The Drilled Equipment position statement provides a framework for agreeing where bolts are acceptable and where they are not in terms of climbing ethics; it provides further guidance to the 1992 BMC Drilled Equipment Policy.
The Dry Tooling position statement relates to dry tooling on outdoor crags in ‘summer’ conditions; it does not refer to mixed climbing or dry tooling in winter conditions or to dry tooling in climbing walls.
