Bangor Uni students bag 1,320 items of litter at Penmaen Head, North Wales

Posted by Claire Maxted on 30/04/2024

The stats are in from the Bangor University Mountaineering Society (BUMS, excellent acronym) crag clean up at Penman Head, a natural limestone sport climbing venue in North Wales, near Colwyn Bay.

This meet was in conjunction with Trash Free Trails and forms part of their Citizen Science Programme which will contribute to its State of Our Trails Report in 2024. For this, each volunteer also analysed what they collected to provide more information on how single-use pollution impacts the local environment and wildlife. For more information on the Trash Free Trails Citizen Science programme, click here, and the BMC hopes to collaborate with them on future clean ups too.

Clean up stats

A total of 1,320 items in 8 bin bags including:

23 poo bags, full of poo

54 plastic water bottles (top brands Coca Cola, Pepsi and Lucozade)

66 alcoholic drink cans

92 crisp packets

133 plastic carrier bags

190 confectionary wrappers

Access & Conservation Officer (Wales) Tom Carrick says, “This was a fantastic day with 17 students removing a huge amount of litter and analysing it for Trash Free Trails. If anyone else is visiting soon, 10 minutes with a bin bag to remove anymore waste would be greatly appreciated. We’re hoping to run a similar day with Cardiff University Mountaineering Club very soon. Do get in touch if you’d like to take part in or organise a local crag clean up with your club.”

Myfyrwyr Prifysgol Bangor yn bagio 1,320 eitem o sbwriel ym Mhen Penmaen, Gogledd Cymru

Mae'r ystadegau o waith glanhau Cymdeithas Mynydda Prifysgol Bangor (BUMS, acronym ardderchog) ym Mhen Penmaen, lleoliad dringo sbort calchfaen yng Ngogledd Cymru, ger Bae Colwyn.

Roedd y cyfarfod hwn ar y cyd â Trash Free Trails ac mae'n rhan o'u Rhaglen Gwyddoniaeth i Ddinasyddion a fydd yn cyfrannu at eu Hadroddiad ‘Cyflwr Ein Llwybrau’ yn 2024. Ar gyfer hyn, bu pob gwirfoddolwr hefyd yn dadansoddi'r hyn a gasglwyd ganddynt i ddarparu mwy o wybodaeth am sut mae llygredd yn effeithio ar yr amgylchedd lleol ac ar fywyd gwyllt. Ar hyn o bryd mae Trash Free Trails yn chwilio am grwpiau i ymuno â'u rhaglen Gwyddor Dinasyddion, cliciwch yma i ddarganfod mwy, ac mae'r BMC yn gobeithio cydweithio â nhw ar y prosiect hwn ar lanhau yn y dyfodol hefyd.

Glanhau stats

Cyfanswm o 1,320 o eitemau mewn 8 bag bin gan gynnwys:

23 bag poo, llawn poo

54 potel dŵr plastig (brandiau Coca Cola, Pepsi a Lucozade yn fwyaf cyffredin)

66 o ganiau diod alcoholig

92 pacedi crisp

133 bagiau plastig

190 pecynnau melysion

Dywedodd y Swyddog Mynediad a Chadwraeth (Cymru), Tom Carrick: "Roedd hwn yn ddiwrnod gwych gyda 17 o fyfyrwyr yn casglu llawer iawn o sbwriel ac yn ei ddadansoddi ar gyfer Llwybrau Di-sbwriel (Trash Free Trails). Os oes unrhyw un arall yn ymweld yn fuan, byddai treulio 10 munud gyda bag bin i gael gwared ar wastraff bellach yn cael ei werthfawrogi'n fawr. Rydym yn gobeithio cynnal diwrnod tebyg gyda Chlwb Mynydda Prifysgol Caerdydd yn fuan iawn. Cysylltwch â ni os hoffech gymryd rhan mewn neu drefnu gwaith glanhau crag lleol ar gyfer eich clwb."
