A special award has been given to mark the achievements of the British Services’ Expedition to Makalu (8463m), which succeeded in putting the 6th, 7th and 8th Britons on its summit.
The award was presented at a ceremony held at the Royal Air Force Club in London on 19 March to mark outstanding achievements for sporting endeavours to members of the British Armed Forces.
Such an award, which recognised the expedition as ‘arguably the most successful in the 50 year history of Joint Services’ Mountaineering’, is unprecedented. The expedition to the Nepalese Himalaya took place between March and June 2008.
HRH Price Edward presented the awards, which were received by Expedition Leader Wing Commander David Tait and summiteers Squadron Leader Jonathan Percival and Major Matt Hing. Surgeon Captain Andrew Hughes, who led the Development Team collected the trophy on behalf of Lieutenant Lara Herbert, who is currently deployed on operations.
