One Show presenter Alex Jones landed in Zion National Park, Utah last week and has spent the weekend preparing to climb the epic Moonlight Buttress with top climber Andy Kirkpatrick.
Moonlight Buttress is a famous ten-pitch climb in Zion National Park. Its mighty burnt-orange walls attract climbers from around the world to test themselves on the 1,200 feet aid-climb classic – graded 5.9, A1.
It’s a huge tick for any climber, let alone Alex, who prior to January had never tried climbing. Now, after three months training at The Castle in London and one outdoor climb at Pembroke, the 36-year-old has admitted that she’s still “petrified” at the idea.
Alex is climbing it for her Sport Relief challenge, Alex Against the Rock, raising money for people living incredibly tough lives in the UK and around the world, including families affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
A three-hour practice climb over the weekend – her second-ever outdoor climb – went well and now she’s now resting before the challenge starts tomorrow, when you can watch her mountainous journey on The One Show every night from 7pm, BBC One.
Helping her up the route will be top British aid climber Andy Kirkpatrick, so look out for glimpses of "Hull’s most famous climber" on the box too.
Good luck Alex!
