Alan Hinkes receives OBE

Posted by on 23/02/2006

Mountaineer Alan Hinkes was presented with his OBE yesterday at Buckingham Palace. Alan received the accolade in the Queen’s New Year's Honours list for his services to sport.

In May of 2005, Alan became the first Briton, and one of only 13 mountaineers, to have climbed all 14 of the world’s 8000-metre peaks. Alan said: "It has taken me over 15 years to complete the Challenge 8000 and I am honoured to receive an OBE. I'm very much looking forward to celebrating with my daughter, Fiona." Dave Turnbull, Chief Executive of the British Mountaineering Council said: "It’s fantastic that Alan's great achievement and valuable contribution to mountaineering has been recognised through receiving this high honour." Alan Hinkes is Chair of the BMC North East Area Committee, and also a member of the BMC International Committee. Congratulations Alan!
