Are you heading off on a summer adventure? Here are our five reasons why you should be packing BMC Travel Insurance.
1. We know what you do
The BMC knows the needs of walkers, climbers and mountaineers - we’ve been insuring them for more than 30 years. That means you can crack on with your adventure knowing that we’ll back you up if things don’t go to plan. Don’t just take our word for it though - ask the pros.
“BMC Travel Insurance gives me peace of mind every time I head to the Alps or further afield on a climbing trip, allowing me to concentrate on my climbing and having a fun time,” says climber and instructor Calum Muskett.
Top climber Shauna Coxsey adds that she wouldn’t leave the UK without taking out travel insurance with the BMC. “From personal experience, I can say that the BMC’s travel insurance is amazing,” she says.
If you’ve got something extra special planned, we’ll almost certainly be able to cover that too. We provide bespoke quotes for expeditions to high-altitude and remote areas, as well as pro cover for qualified guides and instructors who are members of a professional organisation.
2. It doesn’t just cover mountaineering…
Fancy squeezing a bit of skiing into your peak-bagging expedition? Perhaps you’re sport climbing on the coast and feel like getting stuck into a few water sports on your rest day. No worries - the BMC will be spotting you all the way.
“We offer cover for a variety of sports outside the ‘core mountaineering activities’ and you don’t have to declare activities (except for High Altitude and Remote Area policies), just pick the level of cover relevant to you,” says BMC insurance manager Lynda Buckley. “And if you want to go off-piste on your next ski trip then don’t worry - we’ve got that covered too!”
Alongside a wide selection of adventure sports, of course, you’ll also be covered for all the travel basics: emergency medical care, cancellation, personal accident, baggage and airspace closure to name just a few. Unlike some other policies we don’t limit the number of winter sports days allowed either, so you’re protected throughout the year.
3. You’re covered everywhere you go
With the correct level of cover, whether you’re big wall climbing in the USA, planning a virgin ascent in Antarctica or hut-to-hut trekking in the Alps, you can be covered by BMC Travel Insurance. Literally the only place we can’t provide insurance for is Cuba.
Crucially, you’ll also be insured for trips within the UK - just as long as you have at least one night of accommodation pre-booked or you’re enjoying an insured activity such as climbing. Choose between single or annual multi-trip policies, and insure yourself as an individual, couple or family. While BMC Insurance is a members-only benefit, affiliated members can add relatives to their policy for a small additional fee.
4. Instant assistance
When something goes wrong on a trip, you want it sorted right away. That’s why we’ve got a 24-hour emergency assistance helpline. We’ll cover up to £10 million emergency medical costs, as well as up to £100,000 for search, rescue and recovery, and up to £10,000 personal accident cover. Peace of mind - sorted.
5. It’s all for a good cause
You can feel extra virtuous when you take out insurance with the BMC, because all profits go towards climbing-, walking- or mountaineering-related causes. Over the past year, we’ve worked hard to make your money count. Our activities have included campaigning to get the outdoors onto the election agenda, raising awareness over crowding on Snowdon and teaming up with 27 other organisations from across the country to convince the government of the importance of protecting and enhancing our landscapes.
We review our rates regularly to make sure we’re highly competitive - and you can get an extra 10% discount for booking online. What’s not to like?
