Head for the hills courses

Posted by Carey Davies on 18/12/2014

Love the idea of walking in the mountains this summer but want to have the right know-how first? Join us in the heart of Snowdonia to learn the skills you need to be a confident hill walker, at a bargain price.

In Britain we have some of the most bold and beautiful mountain landscapes in the world. Sure, they’re not that big when compared to monster-sized mountains in the Alps or Himalayas. But they possess a glory all of their own. As Doug Scott, who became the first Briton to climb Everest in 1975, said: “I’m always asked what my favourite mountain is and am expected to say Everest – but I always say Blencathra.”

From Dartmoor to the Lake District, from Snowdonia to the Scottish Highlands, these mountains are open for all to explore. Better still, hill walking is not an ‘elite’ sport; anyone with reasonable fitness and ability can climb the vast majority of Britain’s hills. But these hills can present challenges and dangers that can only be overcome with proper knowledge, preparation and skills.

Head for the Hills courses

The BMC has teamed up with the Plas y Brenin, the national mountain centre at  in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park to offer huge discounts (as much as 50% off) on weekend courses designed to give a grounding in the essential skills you need for a lifetime of hill walking.

No previous experience is necessary. It’s your chance to walk in one of Britain’s most spectacular mountain landscapes under the friendly and superb guidance of experienced instructors at a bargain price. Not a bad way to spend a weekend.

Travel information

Getting there by road
Capel Curig is on the A5 (London to Holyhead Road) and the Centre is about 400 meters from the village along the A4086. If you are coming from the North, take the M56, A55, A5 or A470.

Getting there by train
You need to get to Llandudno Junction Railway Station. Many trains depart from London, with connections from other parts of the country at Crewe and Chester.

Plas y Brenin offers a free collection service from Llandudno Junction on the evening before the first day of your course and return you on the last day of your course. As the station is about 25 miles away, PYB only pick people up and drop off once a day. PYB will pick up at the station at 9.30 pm and leave Plas y Brenin at 5.30pm on the day your course ends. You should not book your train home any earlier than 6.30pm.

There are occasional trains during the day which run between Llandudno Junction and Betws-y-Coed, which is 6 miles from the Centre. From Betws-y-Coed, there is an infrequent bus service to Capel Curig. Please see www.traveline-cymru.info or phone 0871 200 22 33 for up to date bus times.
