Booked use of the meeting circle space below the Lazy Day Sector (routes Brian to Blackberry inclusive) has priority over climbing.

The woodland which includes the approach and the climbing between the hostel parking and the hostel itself is owned by the Grith Pioneers who are happy to allow public access to the woods and for climbing to take place.

The area of land behind the hostel and including the Lazy Day and Woodshed climbing areas are leased by the Grith Pioneers to the hostel. The hostel management are happy to welcome climbers and maintain a positive relationship with climbers and the BMC.

Climbers should at all times be mindful of and respectful of other woodland users.

Access Restriction

The meeting circle area below the Lazy Day Sector (routes Brian to Blackberry inclusive) is used by the hostel as a bookable space for hostel users and community groups.

If climbers arrive and find that the meeting circle space below Lazy Day Sector is booked and in use or if you are asked to leave this space to allow an activity to take place then they should do so politely as soon as is practically possible. At these times it will still be possible to climb in the Woodshed and Hostel area at these times.

There is signage on site to indicate this agreement.

The hostel website may be a useful point of reference for regular events but the space can be booked at any time. Events are sometimes publicised on their Facebook page.

Failure to follow this agreement may result in a loss of access.

Parking and Approach

The approach and parking is now best made from Higg Lane Alderwasley where there is a small area of roadside parking. This can be approached from either the Wirksworth to Belper Road or from the A6 at Whatstandwell.

Please ensure you park sensibly without blocking the gate or obstructing the road. There is room here for up to 10 cars.

Go through the gate and follow the main wide path for 5 minutes until it bends down rightwards and leads to a parking area on the left which is reserved for the Youth Hostel. From this woodland parking area head east towards the hostel along the wide path. This wide path usually has a chain across and wheelbarrows chained up for hostel users to transport luggage. After about 5 mins you will reach the first buttress, Goose Roof, on the left, just after this Peaches and Crust which is hidden from view in the bushes. In another 3 minutes you will arrive at the main area approaching and behind the hostel.

The traditional approach mentioned in guidebooks has very limited parking and the walk in is no shorter than the preferred approach detailed above.

This traditional approach is from Jackass Lane, which can be reached by turning into Holly Lane off the A6 at Ambergate. Drive along this and the continuation called Jackass Lane, to possible parking at a lay-by outside a house and opposite a farm. DO NOT DRIVE DOWN THE TRACK. Walk down the track next to the house for around 250m to an open area in the woods on the right which is the parking for Hostel users mentioned above.

Please be aware that the owner of the house by the layby and gated entry to the woods is trying to stop people parking in the lay-by mentioned in the above information. The situation is unclear, but the layby does appear to be part of the public highway
