Tributes: Rick Allen dies in K2 avalanche
On July 25, Rick Allen (November 1954 - July 2021) died in an avalanche while attempting a new route on K2, aged 68. Something of a 'legendary grandfather' in Himalayan climbing circles, he was best known for making the first complete ascent of Nanga Parbat’s Mazeno Ridge in 2012, with Sandy Allan, for which the pair earned a Piolet D'Or.
GB win 6 medals at Paraclimbing World Champs 2021
Fantastic results from the GB Paraclimbing Team at the IFSC Paraclimbing World Championships 2021 in Moscow, Russia, with six medals including two World Champions.
Mountaineer and vaccine director Andy Pollard knighted
It’s not every day that a BMC member is knighted. Amongst those commended in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list this year is Andrew Pollard, who you might have heard on the Today program. As well as being the Director of the Oxford Vaccine Group at the University of Oxford, which developed the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, Andrew happens to be a striped Himalayan mountaineer.
