Which of our 5 policies is right for you?
Travel
For those who are not participating in any sports but require short term travel,
cancellation, medical and baggage cover only.
For
a list of activities covered by the Travel policy please refer to the Policy Document.
The Travel only policy is not available to those aged 70 and above.
The Travel only policy is restricted to single trip cover. Multi-trip cover is available
with the Trek, Rock and Alpine & Ski policies.
What’s not covered:
- Any journey which is solely a pleasure cruise, unless agreed by us in writing in
advance
- Sporting, adventure or activity holidays
Trek
For hill walking, trekking, backpacking and scrambling up to 5000m.
What's covered:
- Mountain walking in Britain – including the use of crampons and ice-axes.
- Recognised trekking routes with simple glacier crossings and easy scrambles.
- Via ferrata.
- Mountain-walking trips including adventurous treks in the Alps, Pyrenees and lower
routes in the Andes and Himalayas up to 5000m.
- Non-technical ascents of easy trekking routes on peaks that do not require the use
of technical climbing equipment.
Examples: Tour du Mont Blanc (not summit), Walkers' Haute Route
Chamonix -Zermatt, GR 20, Vie ferrate in the Pyrenees and Dolomites, Inca Trail,
treking in Patagonia and Yellowstone. Normal trekking routes on peaks such as: Tiede,
Marmolada, Machu Picchu, Mount Toubkal, Mount Kinabalu
What’s not covered:
- Ascents of graded climbs or technical ascents.
- Trekking above 5000m (for
this you'll need our Alpine & Ski policy)
- Trekking in remote, inaccessible or
polar regions. (for this you should contact the BMC office)
Examples: Everest Base Camp and most trekking peaks in Nepal, Kilimanjaro,
Mount Kenya, Chimborazo, Aconcagua.
Other sports covered:
Canoeing and Kayaking (inland waters up to Grade 2 and coastal waters up to 12 miles
offshore), Cycle Touring, Horse Riding (excluding racing and jumps), Rowing, Snorkelling,
Snowshoeing, Swimming, Surfing.
Rock – Altitude limit 5000 metres
For rock climbing and bouldering – indoors and outside up to 5000m.
What’s covered:
- Trad climbing, single or multi pitch with leader placed protection (including big
walling and lead climbing
- Bouldering
- Sport climbing
- Speed climbing
- Abseiling
- Soloing
- Deep-water soloing
- Indoor climbing walls
Examples: Fontainbleau, El Chorro, Kalymnos, Colorado, Wadi Rum,
Troll Wall, Yosemite, crags in alpine valleys with no glacial approaches, Val di
Mello, Dolomites.
What’s not covered:
- Rock climbs with crevassed approaches or descents
- Any snow or ice climbing.
- Climbing and abseiling above 5000m (for this refer to our Alpine & Ski policy)
Other sports covered:
All ‘Travel’ and ‘Trek’ activities are covered, plus: Canoeing/Kayaking (inland
waters up to Grade 3 and coastal waters up to 12 miles offshore) Orienteering, Yachting
(inland and coastal waters only, excluding racing). Mountain and cross country running
(Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, Marathon des Sables)
Alpine & Ski
Trekking above 5,000 metres, and most types of skiing, climbing and mountaineering
on most peaks of up to 6,500m
What’s covered:
- Recreational skiing activities including on-piste, off-piste, cross country, dry
slope/indoor slope, backcountry/touring, downhill, Telemark, Nordic, heli/cat-skiing,
and ski-mountaineering but always excluding Extreme skiing (refer to policy wording
for full details), big mountain, ski-jumping etc, ski-jumping, paraskiing, kite-skiing
and Freestyle (eg: Aerials, Big Air, Halfpipe, Ski-Cross and Slopestyle).
- Scottish winter climbing, ice climbing, alpine climbing
- All climbing in Europe and most peaks worldwide up to 6,500m
- Trekking above 5000m eg. Most trekking peaks in Nepal, standard trekking routes
on Aconcagua, via Horcones-, Vacas- and Guanacos- Valleys.
- Snowboarding can be covered on payment of additional premium
Examples: Technical Winter climbing in Scotland. Mont Blanc and
all the European Alps, Climbers' Haute Route Chamonix-Zermatt. Kilimanjaro, Mt Kenya.
Southern Alps (New Zealand & Australia). Denali (Western Buttress only), Mt Foraker,
Mt Hunter & Mooses Tooth. Chugach, Bugaboos, Cascade Ranges, Wind Rivers & Canadian
Rockies. Island Peak, Everest Base Camp Trek, most trekking peaks in Nepal, Amphu
Labsta & Gondogoro passes, Antisana, Cayambe, Illiniza Sur, Ojos Salados, Illimani,
Aconcagua (except Polish Glacier & other technical routes).
What’s not covered:
- Climbing in remote or inaccessible regions
- Exploratory expeditions and new
routes on unclimbed peaks
- High-altitude technical climbing over 6,500m, especially in the Greater Ranges (Himalaya,
Tien Shan, Karakoram, Andes etc)
- Competitive winter sports
- Free-riding, ski-jumping, paraskiing and kite-skiing
- Freestyle (eg: aerials, big air, halfpipe, ski-cross and slopestyle)
Other sports covered:
All ‘Travel’, ‘Trek’, and ‘Rock’ activities are covered plus: Canoeing/Kayaking
(inland waters up to and including Grade 5 and coastal waters up to 12 miles offshore),
Cycle racing, Mountain Biking, White Water Rafting, Scuba Diving (limited to 30m
depth), Winter Sports including Ice Skating, Dog Sledging and Tobogganing.
High Altitude and Remote Areas
For all mountaineering and climbing activities including climbs and expeditions
to very inaccessible regions and difficult or extreme high-altitude peaks anywhere
in the world.
What’s covered:
- Expeditions attempting new routes or exploratory mountaineering in the high mountains
of Asia, South America, the Arctic and Antarctic.
Examples: Everest, Cho Oyu, Ama Dablam, K2, Denali, Aconcagua (Polish
Glacier routes etc), Shishapangma, Mt Vinson, Denali (Cassin Ridge), Gunnbjorns
Fjeld, Mount Khuiten, Peak Lenin, Huascaran.
Other sports covered:
Covers all activities under other policies plus any other activity declared to and
agreed by us.
