Common Wood Quarry

Duddon

Caution: The quarry was formed by the collapse of a chamber which has left deep hidden clefts and tottering blocks. Special care should be taken with a gaping hole beneath the right side of the main wall which drops into a watery black abyss. Many of the climbs are protected bolts of varying vintage, although some are as recent as 2020. The age and method of  manufacture, some are mild steel and date from 1998, may determine their reliability. Many of the landings are dangerous so a clipstick is advised to protect the start of some of the routes. There re no fixed anchors for lowering off.

Parking and Approach

Park at a layby on the west side of the road, just north of Low Wood House. Walk south and cut back on a rising rough cobbled track that zig-zags through woodland, pass through two gates and the quarry lies to the north hidden above the final spoil heap.

Abseil (recommended) or on foot from the east or west rim. Above Main Wall a stake  by a grassmound and a large block nearby provide belays. Many of the finishes require fighting through heather to top out.
