24-09-2025 New signage has appeared and work has been carried out (possible fence installation) affecting the main parking spot. It is thought this has been provoked primarily by other recreational users and the use of vehicles on site.

The disused quarry of Moss Rake has three developed sections including an interesting slab which gives some good technical climbing of an unusual style for Peak District limestone. There is also a chert wall with a set of dirtier routes and a shorter upper tier.

There is no access agreement with the landowner for Moss Rake and private property signs have been put up. In practice climbing has continued unchallenged for many years and the prohibition is not enforced. Maintaining a low profile and politely leaving if asked to do so it advisable.

Restrictions apply from 1 March - 30 June.

Reason: Nesting Birds

2026 update: the restriction is in force for this year, please do not climb in the quarry until after 30th June.

Parking and Approach

From parking by the gate at the eastern side of the quarry walk through the gate and up into the first landscaped section of the quarry. Bear left up a grassy slope to a ridge overlooking the bigger second section. Drop down here steeply on scree and follow the track at the bottom initially under the chert wall and then on to the slab know as the 'Library'. An alternative slightly longer approach is available from parking at the western end.

you have no permission to access the land at Moss Rake, neither has anyone sought permission, vehicle registration numbers are being recorded and the repeated removal of "Private Land" signs has been noted by the police.

Don't know how to be registered so I suppose I'll remain anonymous...
I live just down the road from here and there has been a massive problem with Motor cross bikes using the quarry, as anyone who has visited in the last 2 years will know, through the damage to the landscape and the noise pollution in what is otherwise a quiet location. The landowner does not want anyone to trespass on his land, hence the numerous signs erected recently, and that includes climbers. As a keen local climber having done a couple of new routes here it would be great if people just avoided this crag for now to allow the situation to settle down. The police, both local and Rural Crime Team are in regular attendance and if climbers are seen as part of the 'problem' then it will make any future access negotiations more difficult. Please stay away for now. Thanks,
