Parking and Approach

The best approach is from Rough Castles, just off the A697 Morpeth-Wooler road. Turn left off the main road half a mile North of the crossroads with the B6341 at a bend signposted to Thrunton Wood. Park about 200m from the junction where a forestry road leaves on the left. Walk along the forest road until you reach the pylons. Pass beneath them then turn right mimmediately, walking 50m along the tree-line at the edge of their clearing, until you notice an obvious gap in the trees. Walk through here (stooping beneath 2-3 pine trees) and emerge into a clearing. Following the clearing up the hill (and through plenty of bracken) you'll come to the Kail Stone. Slightly further up the hill is another minor crag. There is a right of access to this land under CRoW (11/03/2012).
